| Huntington Beach Police officers have had their hands full during the U.S. Open of Surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier. 26 arrests were made within five hours on August 4 near the competition site. “We didn’t have a riot or anything, there were just (several) people at the beach,” he said Thursday. Lt. Russell Reinhart said the police expect activity at the pier to get “much busier” as the weekend approaches. “This happens every year for this surfing contest event,” he said. At least 26 arrests were reported between 1:13 p.m. and 6:29 p.m., each with at least one misdemeanor, records show. This means police made an arrest about every 20 minutes near the pier. The arrests were labeled “pedestrian check,” records said. There were about 30 other pedestrian checks from 1:05 p.m. to 10:34 p.m. that day in downtown. Those incidents resulted in police filing reports, issuing warnings or assisting the public, records show. In comparison, there were three incidents of misdemeanor arrests related to pedestrian checks on Tuesday and none on Monday, records show. “We didn’t have a riot or anything, there were just (several) people at the beach,” he said Thursday.
